RE: Being honest about weight

Sounds like the weight posted in the motor homes are accurate, unless you buy one with dealer installed options. I've looked at hundreds of them and seldom see any dealer installer options. So, the big caution is to know what the CCC is. Next, remember you're going on weekend outings or vacations: you don't have to bring everything you own in the motor home. You can always find a laundromat or a Wal-Mart. We kept a pencil and pad handy the first couple of times we went out and made a note of anything we forgot to bring or felt we needed. After several outings, we started taking things out of the motor home that we found out we didn't need. We had a completely empty outside storage bin on our last cross country trip.

RE: What do you fill up storage compartments with?

Sorry, I didn't go down the list of Forums far enough to see that there is a Snowbird Forum. Thanks for the replies. We're not golfers and that's about the bulkiest gear listed.

What do you fill up storage compartments with?

Do you really fill up all of the storage space in a Class A when you snowbird? We plan on being snowbirds in a Class A next year. We've had our C for over 5 years and lived in it as long as 3 weeks at a time. We've been traveling from San Diego to Pittsburgh every summer and had an empty compartment the last time. The only thing we can think of bringing when we snow bird that we don't bring now is a sewing machine.

RE: Buying a new patio awning

I like my A&E 8500. Because of the ratcheting design, I don't have to worry about it unrolling while I'm driving. It's mounted to the motorhome so that I can just unroll it and extend the support arms or remove the support arms from the motor home and stand them on the ground. I never leave it extended while we're gone, and seldom leave it extended over night. I wouldn't pay extra for electric operation.

RE: Backing up a fifth wheel

Besides practicing, always get out and check the site one more time before backing into it. Check clearance on both sides, the end, and overhead branches. Then roll down the windowa on both sides of your truck and have your wife stand where she can observe and guide you, and you can see her. And, no yelling at each other!

RE: Need a bike rack-2 bikes

I bought a 3 bike rack that fits over the trailer hitch and I'm satisfied with its sturdiness. It pivots down for easier unloading. I bought it because i could find a sturdy rack for the ladder. Everything I saw was not rated for heavy bikes, maybe 1 bike or a couple of lawn chairs. Also, carrying them on the toad is OK but we don't always bring the toad.

RE: New member and Class C has 7 problems

Before you cover the hole: was it for a TV cable? My motor home didn't have provision to connect to a RV park cable outlet, so I had to run cable from the Wineguard antenna connection in the coach to the compartment the electrical cable is in. I have a 20' cable there, and a spare 20' cable with connector just in case. (I've been to places where the utility connections are at the wrong end of the site.)

RE: Tire/Air guage Correct readings

The H-D gauge is for 0-60 PSI; my tires need more than that. I stopped worrying about the differences between gauges. If my gauge doesn't read the same as someones else's, it doesn't matter. I take the readings and watch for tire wear. I pay attention to the handling and steering. As long as the motor home keeps going straight when I take my hands off the wheel and both front tires are wearing the same (evenly), I figure the alignment and tires must be OK.

RE: Made offer and it was accepted, here we go.

Well, you've got the checklists, and everyone's telling you petty much the same thing. So, I'll put in my two cents. For the first time out, consider only taking your wife and live in it for a weekend, even if you only drive 25 miles away from home. Take time to use everything and try to understand how things work. Without children, you'll have more time and patience to try to get things to work, if they don't. And, if you can't figure something out, and you're at an RV Park, don't be embarassed to ask for help. But, try to find out if the person you're about to ask for help has any qualifications or credibility: you don't want some bozo screwing around with your new toy!

RE: NEW GUY! Taking delivery 11NOV, VERY excited...scared?

Congratulations! Someone posted a great idea here before: bring a video camera and notebook with you when you go for a walk through of the systems and equipment. And be sure to get all of the instruction manuals and warranty cards; there's usually one for each item, not only the appliances but the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, too. When you get home, read the manuals. I keep mine in a 3 ring binder with some plastic pouches for odd shaped pages. It's also helpful to take them to the motor home and right down the part number and serial number of each item on the appropriate instruction manual.

RE: Replace Tires?

Also, make sure that CostCo will install tires on your trailer. You may have to bring the wheels in for them to install the tires. Not all shops are equipped to handle motor homes or trailers due to their size, height, weight.

RE: GPS

GPSs today are all pretty good. I was always a Garmin fan, but I picked up the cheapest Mio (Moov 200) for $129 and it's fast to find it's location and plan a route. It includes Text to Speech. Text to Speech is the one feature I think you really should look for in a GPS: it's so comforting to have the GPS continually repeat the highway number or street name when providing instructions.

RE: Lost wheel covers on a class c

I lost both rear wheel covers, the snap on kind. Too expensive to replace. I saw 16' wheel covers for less than $10 at Wal-Mart. I'll put a couple of those on when I get ready to sell.

RE: San Diego gas fridge repair & buying solar & batteries?

The place in Santee might be Howell's RV Repair, 619-449-6231. He's 75 and still in business. He did Norcold recall work for me a couple of years ago. I hope I never need any repairs, but if I do: he's my first choice.

RE: Tire Pressure Sticker over Wheel Well.

...The pressure on the sidewall is proper for the weight on the sidewall... This means for the maximum the tire is rated for by the manufacturer. Unless a tire is supporting the maximum weight it is rated for, inflating a tire to the maximum pressure marked on the sidewall will result in a harsh ride. That's why you should know the weight on each wheel and inflate tires accordingly, as per the manufacturers web site info.

RE: valve stems

I suspect the valve stems, not the extenders. It should be easy enough to make sure the extenders are secured to the stem and the caps are on the extenders. I had metal valve stems installed when I had my tires replaced on the road last year, and had extenders installed when I got home. I haven't had any problems. I feel much better being able to easily check my tire pressure every night or morning while on the road.

RE: 2 Separate Black Tank Valves ???

My motor home is the same way. The bathroom sink drains into the black tank along with the toilet on the passenger side. There is a slide valve on the passenger sideat the beginning of the drain pipe that crosses over to the main dump valve. There is a second valve on the black tank drain just before the main drain valve. The kitchen sink and shower drain into the grey tank which hs a separate valve just before the main drain valve. I keep all of them closed except when actually draining. I have to open both drains for the black tank and the main drain. After the black tank is drained, I close the two black valves and drain the grey tank, then make sure that all four valves are closed before disconnecting the hose.

RE: GPS in class C

My old Garmin sat on the dashboard and always worked. I bought a Mio Moov 200 for less than $150 on the way home on our last trip and it worked great sitting in the cup holder next to my right knee.

RE: Proper tire pressure.

The maximum pressure of 80 psi stamped on the tire is the maximum tire pressure the tire is rated for, blah, blah, blah: it is not necessarily the pressure you should inflate to. Unless a tire is supporting the maximum load it can hold, you will probably get a very rough ride from inflating to the maximum psi of 80.

RE: So where are you going this weekend?

We're going elk watching in north central PA. It will be our last day trip for awhile, as we're leaving for San Diego next week.
